Preventing falls as we get older

Updated: Nov 22, 2023

Over the last couple of years I have been supporting the NHS as a physio and recently within GP practice as an FCP. One thing that has moved me is the amount of people with reduced mobility who are at risk of falls in their homes. As we get older there are many things that can influence our balance but there are so many things we can do to rehabilitate our balance and prevent falls.

I think the main thing that upsets me is the lack of opportunities to support and help you all. Back when I qualified we had day hospitals and support services to help reduce these risks as we get older. I am not seeing the same level of services anymore. The funding just isn't there and this isn't right. As we get older this is the time when we need more help and support.

I guess we should question should the NHS be taking on this need or should we as a community put some strategies in place to support each other? It's clear the money just isn't there for the NHS anymore like it was. So perhaps private practices and gyms like Zone should be supporting you better by providing group work and sessions to help screen and assess your mobility.

Currently I offer 1:1 session in my clinic and within people's homes but I am aware this is costly and can only service a small group of people. I would like to be able to help reach more of you. I would like to create a hub or service for those who are starting to be affected in their balance. Perhaps we start this as group sessions, a weekly falls/balance class or maybe we start a support group based at Zone. Just ideas but I will need your help to get this off the ground.

So if you think you know someone or are someone who is having mobility issues then perhaps give me a call and we can discuss your needs and see if we can start to make a difference by providing you better support in our community. This will only be possible if the demand is there to support a group. I know its needed but would people pay to improve their health if we can keep the costs down in a group class?

It's always worth trying to make a difference. here's an interesting article if you would like to read more https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/falls-and-falls-prevention/falls-and-fractures-older-adults-causes-and-prevention
