How Exercise Supports Circulation, Vascular Health, and Ulcer Prevention as We Age

As we get older, circulation can naturally become less efficient. Conditions such as varicose veins, peripheral vascular disease (PVD), and chronic swelling can develop when blood flow slows or struggles to return back to the heart. Over time, this can increase the risk of skin breakdown and leg ulcers.

Our exercise classes are specifically designed to support healthy blood flow, protect long-term vascular health, and keep people moving safely and confidently.

Why movement matters

The muscles of the lower legs — particularly the calves — act like a pump. Every time they contract, they help push blood back up towards the heart. When we sit for long periods or become less active, this pump becomes less effective, allowing blood to pool in the lower limbs.

Our classes focus on:

  • Activating the calf muscle pump to improve venous return

  • Encouraging gentle arterial circulation to nourish muscles and skin

  • Reducing leg swelling, heaviness, and aching

  • Supporting skin health and tissue oxygenation to help prevent ulcers

  • Maintaining strength, balance, and joint mobility to keep walking comfortable

Safe, supported, and progressive

All exercises are carefully selected and guided by healthcare professionals. Sessions are paced and adaptable, making them suitable for people who may be managing circulation issues, mobility limitations, or long-term conditions. Regular attendance can help slow circulatory decline and support independence as we age.

Movement really is medicine — and when done correctly, it plays a powerful role in protecting vascular health and quality of life.
