Horse & Rider: The Pelvic Connection

When we think about riding performance, we often focus on the horse — but there are actually two athletes involved.


At the centre of that relationship is the rider’s pelvis.


Your pelvis isn’t supposed to stay still as the horse walks, trots and canters, its movement is transferred through the saddle to the rider. The rider’s pelvis needs to move forwards and backwards, rotate and move from side to side in response.


Good riders don’t simply hold themselves still. They become skilled at moving with the horse while maintaining control.


That requires a combination of hip and spinal mobility, pelvic control, balance and coordination.


What if the rider is asymmetrical?



None of us is perfectly symmetrical. Previous injuries, dominant sides, stiffness and habitual movement patterns can all affect how we sit.


A rider may:

  • load one seat bone more than the other

  • have less movement through one hip

  • rotate more easily in one direction

  • consistently weight one stirrup

  • collapse through one side of the trunk.


These differences can change the forces transmitted through the saddle to the horse.

But importantly, the relationship works both ways.


If the horse is moving asymmetrically, the rider may compensate for that movement and become asymmetrical themselves.


So when something doesn’t feel right, it isn’t always as simple as deciding whether the problem is the horse or the rider.

Why does this matter?


Research into horse–rider biomechanics has shown that rider position and movement can influence the horse.


Even changing the diagonal during rising trot can alter measurements of the horse’s pelvic movement.


Likewise, the movement of the horse influences how the rider’s pelvis and trunk respond. This is why apparently small restrictions in a rider’s hips, pelvis or spine can become much more noticeable in the saddle.


Where can physiotherapy help?



A physiotherapy assessment of a rider can look at:


Hip mobility • pelvic control • spinal movement • strength • balance • previous injuries • left/right differences


The aim isn’t to make a rider perfectly symmetrical.


It’s to identify whether pain, stiffness, weakness or movement restriction is preventing them from adapting effectively to their horse.


Ultimately, riding isn’t simply a person sitting on a horse.


It’s two athletes creating one movement system — and sometimes improving the rider is an important part of improving the partnership.
